Calling all Knitters and Crocheters: Scarves for Troops Project

SUMMER KNITTERS NEWSLETTER:  “Sharon Howard Scarves for Troops Project”

Dear Knitters, Crocheters and Crafters,

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful and restful summer!

Although it’s HOT out there, it is time to give some thought and action to warm scarves and caps for the 2010 Operation Gratitude Holiday Drive!  In touching base with faithful workers now, perhaps you will be inspired to pick up those needles to ensure that our upcoming drive is the most successful yet!

We are motivated by the overwhelming thanks we get from all who receive one of these “made-with-love” items!  Let us also be inspired by Sharon Howard’s** (see below) support for our Military and her dedication and passion for her Scarves for Troops Project.

2010 Holiday Drive
We want to include a scarf or cap inside each one of the care packages we send this winter to our heroic Service Members deployed overseas.  Our goal this year is 60,000 scarves and caps! As we strive towards this tremendous goal we will need everyone’s help–not just in knitting and crocheting, but in spreading the good word as well.

How You Can Help
In addition to making as many scarves and/or caps that you possibly can in the next few months, please help us to get our message out as well!  If you know any knitting or crocheting groups, or newsletters that support projects such as ours, please let them know about the Operation Gratitude Scarves and Caps project and ask them to post our information.  Here is the basic information to pass along to interested parties:

Also, please attach a brief note of appreciation and encouragement, including your email or mailing address onto each item, so the recipient knows it is hand-made for them!  The note can be as simple as “Hand-Made with Love” OR a letter telling him/her about yourself. If you are uncomfortable including your own email please feel free to use   The note can be sewn, tied or pinned on.

For more details and specific patterns, please email:

In honor of Sharon Howard, our friend and creator of the “Scarves for Troops Project,” and in recognition of the never-ending sacrifices of our troops,  let’s make 2010 a great Holiday Drive.  I thank each one of you in advance for your kindness and support!   You are putting smiles on the faces of thousands of our heroes in harm’s way.

**Sharon Howard was one of our original Operation Gratitude Volunteers and Supervisors.  She launched our very first fundraiser (Used Book Sales) and created the Scarves for Troops program.  Sharon passed away on April 16, 2010 after a multi- year battle with cancer, during which time she never lost her beautiful smile or cheerful nature.  Sharon’s dedication to our Military inspired all around her.  We are honored to dedicate this program to Sharon’s memory.

About Operation Gratitude

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ care packages to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home.
